Something new, something familiar

I was searching youtube for the Chopin Waltzin a minor (slow with the melody in the left hand) and another one kept appearing. The ‘other’ a minor waltz was published in 1955 and is not in my ABRSM edition dating from the 1970s. I find it utterly haunting and delightfully simple. Here‘s just one of many versions on youtube.

After my recent exploration of Billy Mayerl something brought me back to the Gershwin Songbook. These are harder than they look on the page and I wonder if they fall between two stools – too easy for the pros and too tough for the amateurs. I sampled a few versions and bought downloads of Joanna Macgregor’s recording. These are not on youtube, so here’s a version by Marc-André Hamelin.
